Martin Luther King Jr. Paper's Project at Stanford
University
The King Papers Project is a research effort to
assemble and disseminate historical information concerning
Martin Luther King, Jr. and the social movements in
which he participated. Initiated by the Atlanta-based
King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, the Project
became a cooperative venture of Stanford University,
the King Center and the King Estate.

Make it a day on not a day off ( 16 January 2006)
Each year on the third Monday of January schools,
federal offices, post office and banks across America
close as we celebrate the newest American national
holiday. 15 years after Dr. King's death President
Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law making the third
Monday of January a national holiday celebrating the
birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rosa Louise Parks has
been called the "Mother of the Modern-Day Civil
Rights Movement." By not giving up her seat to
a white passenger on a city bus, Rosa Parks started
a protest that was felt throughout the United States.
Her quiet, courageous act changed America and redirected
the course of history.

Le 
National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People
Founded in 1909 in New York
City by a group of black and white citizens committed
to social justice, the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation's largest and
strongest civil rights organization
The Black Panthers 
The
Black Panthers were initially
formed to protect local communities from police brutality
and racism. The group also ran medical clinics and provided
free food to school children. Within a couple of years
the Black Panthers in Oakland were feeding over 10,000
children every day before they went to school.
The SNCC
The
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
After the successful
outcome of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, its leader, Martin
Luther King wrote Stride Toward Freedom (1958). The book
described what happened at Montgomery and explained King's
views on non-violence and direct action. In Greensboro,
North Carolina, a small group of black students read the
book and decided to take action themselves. They started
a student sit-in at the restaurant of their local Woolworth's
store which had a policy of not serving black people.
In the days that followed they were joined by other black
students until they occupied all the seats in the restaurant.
The students were often physically assaulted, but following
the teachings of King they did not hit back.
